UMC Wireless Instructions:  updated 9-20-06

 

This past summer, UMC has expanded and upgraded more than 50 wireless access points (WAPs). 

If you are using one of our new Thinkpad computers, you need to:

  1. Ensure wireless is physically enabled (using left thumb, slide switch on the very front of computer to the right, so it’s showing neon green.
  2. Open Network connections and double click on UMC-A or UMC-B, which are the latest versions.  Some parts of campus may still see UMC-FastA or UMC-Slow-B, but these will disappear soon. 
  3. Note:  if you are at a hotel, coffee shop, or alternative location with wireless, you will need to select their WAP from the listing.  Follow their instructions for their particular WAP.

 

If you are using other computers, follow these settings:

 

1)      Click Start Settings Network Connections – Wireless Network Connections.

2)      Select UMC-A, click Connect.   Click Change Advanced Settings.

3)      Click the “Wireless Networks” tab.  Select UMC-A, then click Properties.

4)      Click the Authentication tab

a) UNCHECK the box:   “Authenticate as computer when computer information is available”

b) Check “Enable IEEE 802 Change the EAP type to Protected EAP (PEAP)

c) Click Properties.

 

5)Protected EAP (PEAP) Properties:  Enter the following:

 

a)  Connect to these servers:  Enter “ns3.umcrookston.edu;ns5.umcrookston.edu; ns2.umcrookston.edu”

b)  Under Trusted Root Certification Authorities:

Check the 2 boxes labeled “Swordfish

c) Check the Enable Fast Reconnect box

d)  Click OK

 

6)  Return to Step #4 and repeat for “UMC-Slow-B”.
