Hardware
Hardware includes items such as your notebook computer, printers,
cameras, or scanners.
Hardware Repair
If your computer fails because of a defect or damage, simply bring
it to the Computer Help Desk, where it will be checked out. Repairs
required due to machine failure will normally be covered under
manufacturer's warranty. Repairs needed because of accident are
covered under Lenovo's insurance package at no extra charge, providing
the student includes an explanation of how the damage occurred.
LCD Tip: Please be careful not to apply too much pressure
to the screen of your notebook. Do not use cleaning materials
containing alcohol. Use a separate carrying bag if possible, so
books don't press against the screen. They can take a lot of abuse,
but small white spots and pressure points can occur. We won't
be able to replace an LCD because of this damage, unless it actually
breaks.
Hardware Repair Costs & Insurance
Students are responsible for the first $500 of damage or replacement
cost in the case of theft; however, you should check with your
insurance company (or your parents' if they're covering you).
In many cases, homeowners or renters insurance will help cover
part or all of this deductible. To make sure your computer is
covered under personal insurance, you should ask your insurance
company to activate a separate rider to that policy that specifies
the notebook computer.

Note from UMC's Friendly Computer Repairman, Dale "Doc"
Kemble
Welcome back! How is your computer doing? I hope you're
treating it well. Remember to keep the cover closed when not in
use to prevent dust and other foreign materials from building
up on the keyboard. Try to avoid eating and drinking around your
computer. The help desk can vacuum your keyboard or clean your
screen for you if needed.
