HOW TO SUBSCRIBE TO NETFILES (TO STORE UP TO 5GB OF FILES ON SECURE TC SERVER)

FOR UMC FACULTY/STAFF ONLY (STUDENTS DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE ZYTHOS CLIENT)

 

I.  SIGN UP FOR ACCESS (1x ONLY)

1.  Go to www.umn.edu/validate.  Login.

2.      Once logged in, scroll to the bottom, select NetFiles Account Options.

3.                  Check the two boxes as shown, click Submit.

 


II.  INSTALL ZYTHOS CLIENT (faculty/staff only)

  1. Go to www.umn.edu/netfiles.  Click the “About NetFiles” link in the upper left hand corner. 
  2. Complete the Windows Client Request as shown.  Click Submit.  Install the client, selecting the defaults


III. SELECT FILES TO BACKUP

Now that you’ve installed the client, you’ll find it in your Programs menu (Start, all programs, Xythos drive).  You’ll also find it in the systray (lower right hand corner). 

1.  Open Zythos.  On the Connect tab, click Service, Edit. 

 

  1. Under Server URL, edit as shown, removing #U and entering your username after users/.

 

We do NOT recommend that you select “Save password”. 

 

3.  You will need to login:  Click “Work Online”, then login.  You should be able to use your regular Crookston login/password.

 


Once you’ve logged in and completed this task, a separate window will open showing drive N:\ .

Note that the www drive is SHARED (not private).  The default folder for Netfiles is a separate N:\Backups folder which is NOT shared and is SECURE.

 


SCHEDULE FILES TO BE BACKED UP:

1. Open Zythos.  Click the Backup tab.

2. You will need to click Files to be backed up:

3.  Select as shown (plus any other files you need):

Here is a  more detailed version of what is recommended to backup on C:\

Your documents are always on drive D:\ on our notebook loads.

 


HOW TO SCHEDULE BACKUPS:

 

1.  Select options to suit your preferences (Daily/Weekly, day of week and time)…click OK.

2.  Select Backup Now to create an initial backup.  It will estimate the size of your backup.  In this example, all the selected files will fit since 606.8MB < 5GB.  Click Yes to start the backup.

 

  1. In this example, it only took a few minutes to move the files around 9am on a Tuesday morning.  Larger size backups and the time of day can influence the amount of time required.
  2. Once you see this screenshot, the backup is complete J
